If I Were You… – Boise Photographer

The other day I was talking with a few other local photographers about how digital cameras are cheap and now everyone is a photographer, so why pay more when your neighbor just bought a sweet DSLR and could totally do it cheaper?

.

The day before I had another photographer friend tell me about a conversation she had with a client whose wedding photos were taken by a “neighbor with a sweet camera” for much less. She also said that the photos weren’t what she was hoping they would be and is now doing a mock shoot to hopefully recover some of the moments that were lost on the wedding day.

.

Now I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer on this Monday morning, but just wanted to share that it DOES HAPPEN. When it does, most of the time those memories can’t be recovered. You might remember this post about wedding photos ruined, but during our discussion we were having someone posted THIS article about the difference between a cheap haircut vs paying a little bit more. It’s a great story.

365 Project

Since November I’ve been blogging every single day. I’m here to tell you that I’m burnt out on it. It is fun but lately it has been a chore.

Starting today-  I’m done with the project. I’ll blog when I feel like it and when I have good stuff to post.

That is all for today!

Macro Photography – Boise Idaho Photographer

I don’t own a macro lens. On my film camera I had one, but I can’t bring myself to buying one for this one because I have so many other things I would like to purchase. I came across this article and decided to try it out. Doesn’t hurt anything right?

I decided to grab my wedding ring and try it out a little bit. I was actually pretty surprised by the results. The photos aren’t super crisp, but I’m pretty happy with the way they look.

PS. I know my sensor is dirty. I ordered something to fix it so I’m waiting for it to arrive.

In Front of the Camera – Boise Idaho Photographer

As per the job, I’m generally behind the camera.

This week my cousin was in town from Missouri and as a bribe to get her down here I had promised that upon arrival we would head out and do a photo shoot. It had been forever since I had been up to Tablerock and I knew I could get some dramatic photos (which I will be sharing with you this week). We trekked up there in the 100 degree heat.

Before leaving I decided I wanted my cousin to snap a couple photos of me up there. After a quick camera lesson, we had some success.

MIA

I was MIA yesterday. It’s been a crazy week but I have lots of fun photos to share next week. Here is a cell phone of my cousin and I. She is in town for the week and we were able to enjoy some fondue last night.

Yoga as Medicine

When I first started college I met a person who introduced me to Yoga. I was always interested in it, but never had pursued it. She showed me a couple beginner dvds and I started doing it every night. Fell in love with it.

I think it was about 2 years after doing it every night my schedule completely changed and I stopped doing yoga because I didn’t have the time for it.

About 8 weeks ago my friend Heather talked me into joining a Friday am yoga class with her. I’m so glad that I did because it reminded me how much I miss yoga. It happens every time I do it, but with this being an 8 week class I was bound to really get back into it.

So this back story brings me to today. I went to go look in my little library of books (which is pretty much 90% about food and health) and a couple books caught my eye that I forgot I had. I grabbed both of them and opened them up.

The first one is called Yoga Anatomy.

Yoga Anatomy Book

Photo pulled off of Amazon.com

It basically breaks down a few different poses and shows you the muscles that are used. It goes into the science and physiology of your body and yoga.  It’s only about 221 pages cover to cover, so it’s not a huge book. I found it helpful in understanding why we do certain poses and how to breath.

The other book I pulled out of my library was Yoga as Medicine.

Yoga as Medicine Book

This book is great because it targets different areas of the body for specific health benefits. This one is about 568 pages cover to cover. More resembles a college textbook but is broken down in different chapters for different areas of concentration. Part 1 is basic yoga philosophy, different areas yoga can help (ie stress and others). Part two explains safety, styles and how to get started. Part 3 is yoga in action. It breaks down into types of treatment (anxiety, arthritis, asthma, backpain, carpal tunnel, depression, headaches and the list goes on).

It obviously can’t cure diseases and certain medical conditions, but I truly believe that it can help reduce symptoms and make dealing with certain pain much easier. It’s a great alternative to dealing with these sorts of issues with before immediately turning medicine (if that is your thing, some people prefer the meds and that is fine).

One thing that particularly grabbed my attention was this chart that I pulled from the book.

Guest Post: My Wedding Photos Made Me Cry – by Allison Kaptein

I was doing photos for some clients and we came to the conversation of wedding photos. This poor couple had an awful wedding photography experience and were gracious enough to share it with you.

I mainly want to share this because I feel that it’s super important to really get to know your photographer and do your research. These guys were married ONLY 3 YEARS AGO. Which means this was totally recent. You hear lots of horror stories with people getting married 10+ years ago, but it still happens today.

Thanks again Allison for sharing your story.

PS. If you’re reading this in Google Reader you won’t notice the issue, but I apologize if my blog doesn’t look like there much formatting (spacing, paragraph breaks). Still working on fixing that. Bear with me.

My wedding photos made me cry, and they weren’t tears of joy.

Hello Everyone! I am so excited to guest blog for Tamara! My first guest blogging experience.

A few weeks ago Tamara did a photo shoot for me and my husband. The reason? We didn’t get engagement photos taken and our wedding photos are terrible. No really, like the worst wedding photos you have ever seen.
Before we get to the photos, I’ll give you a little bit of a back story…
I was living in northern Idaho, and our wedding took place in Reno Nevada (no I didn’t get married in a drive through chapel, Reno is my hometown). Because I was far away my mom was doing lots of the leg work for the wedding. I would find vendors and locations online and then she and my aunts, cousins, and maid of honor would go check them out, I think they actually quite liked this part, and then report back to me, and we’d make a decision on each particular item. It wasn’t ideal, but it wasn’t that stressful for me either!
When it came time to look for photographers, my mom told me that she had been talking with some ladies at her gym, and that she had a couple of names for me to check out. Most of the photographers had websites, but one woman didn’t. We both checked out the websites, and my mom went to the office of the woman with out the website, but I didn’t. I took my mom’s word that her photos were good. My mom and I narrowed it down to two photographers, the woman who didn’t have a website, and a guy who did.
Through this process I discovered that one of my friends from high school who had recently been married had used the woman photographer. I sent a facebook message to my friend asking about her experience, she responded that she had had a great experience and pointed out to me which photos on her facebook page were taken by this photog.

The photos all looked nice. My mom told me that she preferred the woman’s style to the mans, and that the woman was a bit more reasonably priced. So we went with the female photographer.

Biggest.mistake.of.my.wedding. Seriously.

The worst part? She was great on the actual day! She was personable, yet directive enough to rope the bridal party and families to where they needed to be for
our “requested shots.” Almost. There were some key shots that we don’t have. We have zero pictures of: just me, the entire bridal party together (bridesmaids,
groomsman, the two of us), and only one or two of just the two of us. Even that could be forgivable to me, if the photos were good. But they aren’t. They are
terrible. Photos have weird shadows on them, all of the pictures of the ceremony are blurry, the pictures of our reception are all dark. I have better pictures taken by my aunt who has a basic DSLR camera that she uses as a hobby.

It was a huge disappointment to receive photos like this after our wedding.

Fast forward a few years to our photo shoot with Tamara. I was really hoping that the session would capture “us” in a way that our wedding photos didn’t. And it did. I LOVE the pictures. Even though we aren’t wearing our wedding attire, I already want to replace every wedding photo in our house with these photos.

So moral of the story? Seriously research your photographer, and if they don’t have a website? Forget about it.
