Lately I’ve been experimenting with textures and I’m in LOVE with them. It seems my clients are starting to like them as well. I started off with giving several different options in one shot (one being a textured and one being normal).
I’m using heavy texture for more abstract photos such as this one.

And I’m using less texture for closeups.

My clients are picking the textured over the normal in most cases. Here is an example of normal vs textured.

Textured

Which do you like better?

Definitely Textured. I love how it looks! I have been messing with them, and not quite grasping the technique…but I will get there someday!! Amazing use of the first texture. I love what it does to the sky!!
Hey…have you heard of Kaleidoscope textures? THEY ARE AMAZING…you should check them out. http://kaleidoscope.pattibrownphotography.com/
I’ve been using textures for quite sometime. I really like to use textures in images where it surrealistically changes other natural textures in the photo (e.g., brick walls, sidewalks and streets, metal, wood, sky, water, etc.). I like using it best in urban grunge and fashion. Finding the right texture to use is sometimes an experimental process, and sometimes using multiple textures is a perfect way to add interest to the composition, as well. One thing I’ve quickly become aware of when using textures is how it might affect the appearance of a person’s skin (or other elements). When textures distracting fall on an element in the photo I use techniques that either softens or completely masks out the areas that I don’t want emphasized by the texture.
